It was found resting on a marble pedestal, cradled by fig leaves carved in stone. A curious object, small enough to fit in one hand, dark as night, glistening with gold.

The first to see it could not look away.

What happened next depends on who you ask.

Some say the moment flesh grazed its surface, the heavens split open. Others say the change was slower, so slow they did not realize something had shifted until it was too late.

No one knows. Or rather, everyone knows, and no two tales are the same.

Yet, there is one truth all the stories share:

No one keeps it for long.

It always finds its way back to its pedestal, waiting for the next to seize.

They always follow.

It belongs to no one,
yet all who find it think they do.
